Mike Malone named Outstanding Engineering Alumnus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Mike Malone, vice chancellor for research and engagement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has been named an Outstanding Engineering Alumnus by the College of Engineering.
Established in 1966, the Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the college and recognizes graduates who have reached exceptional levels of professional achievement.
Malone, a native of Carbondale, will receive his award, along with 11 other recipients, at a ceremony on April 20 at the Nittany Lion Inn.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Penn State in 1974 and went on to earn his doctorate in chemical engineering from UMass Amherst in 1979.
Malone served as an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Purdue University for one year, before returning to UMass Amherst, where he has held various teaching and leadership positions, including director of the Process Design and Control Center, head of the chemical engineering department and dean of the College of Engineering.
In 2003, Malone was named to the Ronnie and Eugene M. Isenberg Distinguished Professorship, which was created to enhance interdisciplinary teaching and research between fields of management, engineering and science.
He was appointed to his current position in August 2009. In this role, Malone manages more than $200 million per year in research expenditures, which support more than 1,300 faculty, 6,500 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and a large number of undergraduates engaged in research.
Malone is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and is a recipient of the AIChE Process Development Division Excellence in Process Development Award, the AIChE CAST Division Computing in Chemical Engineering Award, the UMass Amherst Distinguished Teaching Award, and the UMass Amherst College of Engineering Outstanding Senior Faculty Award and General Electric Outstanding Teaching Award.
